Keyword Research

What is it?

Search engines love words that are relevant to what your business does or offers, also called “keywords”. In order for Google, Bing and Yahoo to find you, you need to talk a bit about what your business does, and associated terms.

Consider this.

Lets say you are a wedding photographer. To find you in Google, someone might type “wedding photographer“. So we know that’s a “keyword” that you want to be found for.

They might also type some other words that you could associate with that type of job (also called Latent Semantic Indexing or LSI). So you might search for “wedding photographer near me” or “the best wedding photography in the UK“.

Your website needs to have some carefully selected keywords to be found, and a sprinkling of those magical LSI words too. Gone are the days of typing your chosen keyword 20 times and jumping up the ranks.

I don’t understand why my website is not on page 1 of Google!“. Ahhh, we’ve all been there. Frustrating isn’t it.

There are so many websites out there offering advice on how to get on page 1. Well, I’m going to be really honest with you here. You probably won’t get on page 1 of Google, if you are running a business that’s not niche. The big guns have lots of money to spend on their websites. The have teams of SEO experts paid mega bucks to work on this very subject. As a small business, it’s going to be a lot harder to compete with the big guys. But, the good news is, if you are prepared to think sideways, you can get on page 1.

Welcome to the world of Keywords.

It’s not actually as complicated as you might think. If you’re worried about understanding the technical terms and big scary internet words, don’t be. You don’t have to be an SEO expert to get this. We’ve written this article just for you so its easy to understand how this all works. So here we go.

The Goal

Ultimately, it’s to be found, and drive traffic to your website. Page 1 here we come.

It takes a bit of work and time to figure out what Google likes in terms of the right Keywords for your business. We are all Googler’s now aren’t we? I can’t remember a time when I didn’t ask Google about something. The best way forward is to put yourself in the shoes of your customer. Think like a user.

Google thoughts

The way that Google thinks, is beginning to be like a human thinks. It’s clever enough to associate words with certain topics.

So going back to the “wedding photographer” example, if your searching for photos for your wedding day, you might want a certain style of photography. So you might search for “romantic wedding photo’s”. Google is now clever enough to know that that might be related to wedding photography, and will show you those results. Mentioning the word “wedding” wouldn’t necessarily be required.

You don’t have to be all spammy and keywordy any more to get found. If you talk to Google in your website content like you’re a human answering a question, that’s going to serve you better than talking to a robot like a robot.

There are a lot of websites that are still thinking that stuffing keywords everywhere is the way to be found. Well, that’s no longer the case. If your website’s every second word is a keyword, does it actually read well? Chances are your customers or users are thinking that it doesn’t. This could be a problem for you. Chances are they are not staying on your website for very long. If they leave quickly, this tells Google that the result it provided wasn’t quite right. This is definitely something you want to avoid. Google needs to love the words on your site, and your customers need to enjoy reading them. The user experience should be your focus, not stuffing your content with lots of weird keywords that really have no business being in that particular sentence.

More and more these days people are asking Google “how” questions. We are no longer just searching for single words. So, we have to make our websites have the answers people are searching for. If Google finds your website, and thinks you have got the answer that some one is searching for, it’s going to suggest your business to that person. For the right Keyword language, the illustrious page 1 awaits.

Technical terminology

In our opinion, there is one technical term that can get you found in Google. So here we go.

Long Tail Keywords – ever heard of this before? It’s something SEO experts have been using for a while.

This is a phrase that contains at least three words, ideally more. These long tail keywords are what we are using more and more to find websites in Google. I bet you use them without even realising you’re doing it.

So these long tail keywords are used for search terms not directly associated with the main thing you sell or offer. These terms are often less competitive and therefore easier to be found for. So here’s an example.

Betty sells unicorn hats. In order to find her for “unicorn hats” in Google, her customers might enter into the Google search box “unicorn hats for sale” or “sparkly unicorn hats with multicoloured horns”. If she has those phrases on her website, there’s a good chance Google will find that. This is an example of thinking sideways.

The big company that sells unicorn hats that she competes with, will be found just by typing “unicorn hats” into Google, because they are probably pumping lots of money into a word campaign to make sure they are found for that Keyword.

But Betty can try and be found for the other associated words that are not so popular. As a small business you stand more chance of being found this way.

Doing research is key. Finding out how people could find you, and what words they would use to search for you is what we do. We have some excellent creative brains, and some techy tools that help us with the Keyword generation that you will need to get found.

Putting it all together

So what have we learnt? Keywords are important, and long tail keywords can really get you noticed. Put this all together with some great written content, the right site structure and a few other things, and you’re on your way to being found.

So what can you rank for? Well, the question should be – What words are people using to find my product? Figure this out, and you’re on to a winning rank.

That’s not to say its going to be a quick journey – it takes time to get this right. That’s why a lot of companies invest in SEO companies like ours to provide them support for blocks of time. We offer SEO packages that can get you ranking for the right Keywords, but it’s not going to be an over night success story if you’re doing it the honest way. Sure, there are those that make promises to get you on page 1 quickly. But we know that their practises and methods often leave you open to penalties issued by the Google gods. Did you know that Google can tell if your website is a happy website, or a sad website?

Clever Google. I am pretty sure that one day, Google is going to turn into the SkyNet from the Terminator films. It’s developing into its own entity. It’s being taught by humans to understand and solve problems. Eventually it will suggest what you want before you have typed the first three letters of the word. Google is like a child. It’s learning all the time, and it wants good content and great websites to feed its brains.

Eventually Google is going to be an AI (artificial intelligence). Google is the future of finding things on the internet. If you’re a business that has a website that’s full of keyword randomness, it’s not going to even consider you in it’s results as it continues to evolve. You need to have great keywords, written in a human way or you’re going to get left behind.

Competitor Analysis

What is it?

Why are all of your competitors ranking higher than you despite your website looking way more awesome? By now you will probably have worked out where your website is hanging out in the rankings. I also assume that you have identified some websites that offer similar services or do what you do, that are doing much better at staying on page one of Google.

The key to understanding how you can get to page one, may just be a simple as looking at what boxes your competitors have ticked in terms of Google ranking factors. I am not saying you should copy them. No no. I am saying you can learn from them.

Performing an analysis of your competitors websites is the best place to work out the differences between great website ranking, and hanging off the end of page 2.

Competitor keyword analysis

At Minooh, we use some special software to find out what Keywords your competitors are targeting. There is a question to ask here though – should you actually try and rank for every one of your competitors Keywords? Well, we think Not. Some SEO agencies think it’s a priority, but we don’t agree. It’s simply a case of targeting a few Keywords and monitoring how they perform. Do these keywords actually get any search volume at all? We can figure this out for you.

Competitor on-page analysis

An absence of certain SEO things on their website, might mean that your competitors website isn’t as well optimised as you first thought and they just got lucky. I bet you £10 that you wrote your own words on your website. Most of us do.

It goes back to the thing I said earlier about being a small business. You can’t always afford to spend a huge amount of money on big companies who do copywriting by the buck. So we all do the next best thing, and attempt to do it ourselves.

I am sure your website words have served you well so far, but Google is changing the way it reads our content. It’s probably time for a refresh. Or, if you’re starting from scratch with a new website, the right copy could set you on your way to beating your competitors that haven’t reviewed their website words in a while. Writing copy with SEO in mind is a big skill. You have to make sure you have a good sprinkling of the right keywords, and talk in a language that Google likes. Also, you need to appeal to your readers, and keep them on your website for as long as possible.

So, to be successful, you must go past simply writing content for the search engines. You must answer the users question. The top prize always goes to the optimised website who answers the question the best. By the “prize”, I mean page 1 of Google, and it’s totally out there for you.

When Google has a look at your website, it reads your page and analyses the content based on lots of factors. It looks at how often you have used a certain sort of keyword. It also looks at the authority of that page, and the number of links you have going to it. If it has lots of lovely authority, it’s going to appear to Google as pretty trustworthy.

So we have to write content that pleases Google, and content that pleases the audience.

Website conversion

Ultimately, you goal is to convert that customer reading your copy into a sale. Your website copy needs to demonstrate that it understands the audience, and what they like. The words have to appeal to them and encourage them to spend. An SEO specialist in copy writing can really make a vast difference to how your site reads and is perceived by your customers.

Keeping on top of your content is so Key. Google loves it when you add fresh content. Also, Google likes to shake things up every now and then and often decides to change it’s ranking factors a little bit. Having good fresh content can help you meet all those new factors if you haven’t updated your copy in a while.

Google RankBrain

One thing we haven’t talked about much here is how Google works, and that’s a big factor in how we write content. We mentioned earlier about Google being a learning robot these days, and it’s got a name too. It’s called RankBrain.

RankBrain is Googles name for a machine that’s basically learning as it goes. It processes search results for customers, and tries to find the subject most relevant to what you are searching for. It is doing something called “machine learning”, which is where Google teaches the algorithm much like a child learns and then it modifies its own code in realtime.

How your page titles and H1 tags are important

Another factor in copywriting, is your headline. Your headline, or meta title as it’s technically called, is the little description that lets the search engines and your visitors know roughly what the page is about. This has a very important bearing on how well you rank.

You also have the meta description. There is a very common myth that this is important to ranking but Google themselves have said that the meta description is NOT a ranking factor. However, you can use this to tempt your readers into clicking on your link.

Keyword density

Don’t do what so many others have done before you. Don’t stuff your website content with keywords. When you actually read your content back, does it actually read well? At Minooh we see so many websites that are written with keywords in mind, and not the audience. Google now frowns on this.

However Keywords density can still make a difference to where you rank. Keywords are part of the 200 ranking factors that Google uses, which means it’s still important. They key is not to over do it and appear to be spammy.

Getting the Results

Does the copy on your website actually work? Have you said enough of the right things to make that person either click your website listing in Google, or stay on your page to find out more. You do basically have to sell yourself, don’t be modest.

Also Google loves bullet points. It’s worth starting some of your articles this way, as it helps people quickly decide if the content is relevant to them. Hopefully, they will like what they see and stay on your page to find out more. (are you still there?).

Mobile SEO

What is it?

How does your website look and work on a mobile phone? Chances are you regularly check how it looks on your desktop but never considered just how important the mobile experience is.

If your site takes ages to load on your phone or the graphics are a bit squiffy, you might be in a bit of a pickle.

Everyone is using their phones to look at websites. Mobile phones have taken over the desktop computer as the primary device used to access the internet.

The bad news is, if your website is taking too long to load over a 3G connection, or just doesn’t load properly, no one is going to take the time to tell you. They are just going to bounce off your site, and go look at someone else, probably your competitor.

Google have very kindly provided us with an easy to use tool to test if your website is ready for the mobile era. Simply visit their Mobile-Friendly Test to see if your site has any critical problems you need to address.

We all spend ages on our phones, and if you are a business with a website that isn’t mobile friendly you are going to get left behind.

The first step is to have a look how your website appears on a mobile phone. Things to consider are:

  • How quickly does it load o both a fast connection and a slower 3G connection?

  • How do the graphics look?

  • Is the size of the website right?

  • Is the message you want your visitors to see visible without scrolling?

We are now in an age where having your website looking ‘OK’ is just not going to cut it.

If your site is already optimised well for mobile phones there are only a few extra things you might need to change to make sure you’re compliant when Google releases the Mobile First update.

Page Speed Matters

Page speed is a big factor here. We have about 3 seconds. Everyone is in a hurry for the information they need, in the moment they want it. If your website doesn’t load quickly, people move on.

At Minooh, we have the tools needed to work out what we need to change on your website to get it to load in the speed that the populous are demanding. The bottom line here folks is that if you’re not fast, you’re out. Keep your users and search engines happy and make sure your website is mobile optimised.

What works on your desktop screen, is not the same as what works for mobiles. Mobile screens cannot process information in quite the same way.

Rank Tracking

What is it?

If you’ve done some hard work on putting some of your Keywords into your website, you are going to need to track how they are performing. This is called Rank Tracking.

How on earth are you going to know if your website is even ranking if you don’t check it?

Tracking where you appear in search engines is really the most basic part of running your website. You absolutely need to track how you are performing against your competition.Especially if you are making changes to your content. Seeing the positive changes in your rankings will let you know if your efforts are working. It also lets you see if you have dived of the face of the earth. Google have a habit of changing their algorithm without telling anyone. If your not tracking where you are, how do you know if you’re still visible to your customers?

The biggest question here has got to be “how do I rank for the right keywords”. Well, once we have done your keyword research for you, all you need to do is monitor how these keywords are performing and in your chosen geographic locations.

Alternatively, if you’re the sort of website that is blogging a lot, how do you know if you are getting the most out of it? You really do need a way to track how people are engaging with you based on what you are writing. Just this very simple inexpensive method of analysis can help you target new sources of traffic and get more for buck for your words.

Anyone who depends on their website to bring in their business, needs to check regularly how they rank. Search engines like Google actually issue penalties if you are violating their guidelines. By penalties, this can mean silently dropping your website in its rankings, or worse a manual action. This is where someone in Google has actually looked at your website and decided it’s doing something very dodgy. This is very very bad. Often, you don’t know that you have been given the penalty and you continue blissfully unaware. But if you are running rank tracking, you will notice the change in the amount of traffic coming into your website.

Search engines are always adjusting their search algorithms. Sometimes it’s a very subtle change that realistically affect very little. Others times, they issue very large updates to their search criteria and substantive changes in ranks are evident. Sometimes, we know when a change is coming, sometimes we don’t. They key is to track and keep ahead of the game.

It’s also really nice to see you rankings go up. When you have been working hard on your website for any reason, seeing the changes in where you are in search engines is very rewarding. It also helps you decide if you have the right strategies in place to grow your on line presence. Bear in mind though, it can take some time for your websites rank to settle down into the place that the search engine has judged correct. It is normal for ranks to fluctuate wildly when you are making a lot of changes to your content. Time is a factor, and patience is key. That’s why a monthly monitoring package is ideal if you want to really see the results from your efforts.

Local SEO

What is it?

Have you noticed that when you search for something on the web, you are more likely to see results that are near to you? This is to do with an update that Google back in 2014 to enhance the users experience.

Also, if your business focus is marketing to a local area, then you really need to make sure that your website is optimised for local SEO. If you’re not, you’re going to be missing out on reaching your target audience, giving your competitors the edge.

We check the code which is hidden in your website to make sure it’s saying that you’re local. This is code has a technical name, called “Schema”.

Hot tip – Ensure Google and Bing know you are a local business

Whenever you search in Google it always knows where you are, even if you say ‘no’ to the location question. In those cases it uses your approximate location based on your IP address.

Whenever you perform a search in Google it will nearly always assume you want local results, especially if you don’t specify a location in your search query.

To help Google and Bing know your business is local you can setup your business profile in Google My Business and Bing Places. This is also how you appear in that handy little top 3 map pack at the top of the results.

Bonus tip: Want to rank in a geographic location where you don’t have a physical presence. DON’T register a fake address or PO Box. This is against the Google and Bing webmaster guidelines. If you are looking to rank in multiple geographic areas then we can help with that too.

If you live in Northampton (for example), when you search for a local company that can fix your leaky tap, you really want a result that’s local to you. Google and other search engines are clever enough to work this out, without you having to type in to the search box the area you live in. Clever eh?

This is a great service for the end user, but not so great for a business that wants to offer a service across the country. It can be much harder to be found nationally for a service based locally.

Never fear, Minooh is here 🙂 We have a nifty way of working out where you rank locally and nationally, and even how you rank on mobile phones. We can give you all of this information really easily via some of our SEO analysis of your local results. We can tell you how your business ranks in the area you live, like London, Northampton or Timbuktu.

If ranking locally is what you want to do, we can also make sure you’re ticking all the right boxes for that.

It’s important that you get your business listed in the local directories first, these are called ‘local citations’. Your Keywords come next. Be consistent with your information your share, make sure it’s spelt correctly and all the names and numbers are correct.

Have you ever heard of “Google My Business”? If you want to be found for local products and services it’s quite important. Google My Business is like a directory, but bigger. It’s a free service and it gets you really great exposure if you on it. You may not have realised, but you have probably seen it in action already.

If you do a search now on a search engine for a plumber, you will probably see a big box come up. This shows you a map of where local services are located. This is Google My Business in action. If I search for SEO services in Northampton, Minooh comes up too.

There is a verification process that you have to do to make this work. Google will send a post card with a code in it, to the place that you have told them you are running your business from. This is the way Google makes sure you are for real and legitimate.

You may also notice in the local Google search results that you can leave a review for a product or service. This is a very good way to get your customers to click on your web link rather than a customers. If you can get some good reviews, you’re going to look like a much more attractive option.

The code behind the scenes we mentioned earlier, is called the “Scheme Markup”. This is a little bit of code which is put into back end of the website. It tells a search engine where you are and what your business does. A lot of businesses fail to add this to their websites. Not having this code, could be damaging your local on line presence.

WordPress SEO Audit

What is it?

A website audit is a report that we can do for you, which looks at all the factors that can affect your visibility on the internet.

We look at traffic, pages, keywords, backlinks and so much more. It’s a great way of getting a snap shot of your websites health in the form of an SEO report. It’s also a great place to start if you’re looking to improve your SEO and overhaul everything.

What should an SEO audit include?

A good audit of your website will take a few days to complete. It should be written in a language that you understand. The report should give you a guidance on what’s required, and what’s optional.

At Minooh, we provide the report, and give you the option to make the changes yourself. For some, this is perfectly fine. For others, it’s too technical. If that’s you, don’t worry, we can implement the changes for you as an option in one of our packages.

We check your coding, and your site speed which is a seriously important ranking factor these days. We also check to make sure it’s visible on mobile phones, and loading quickly on all devices.
